The valve face, with the steam ports cut and the surface lapped. The lapping probably wasn't necessary. Note the two shallow grooves milled next to the ports: in operation, the valve itself travels just over the inside edges of these. If the face were completely flat, the valve would wear a ridge at each end of its travel, but the grooves prevent that. Big...

A partially finished cylinder casting, with the steam chest and cover bolted on. Big...

One cylinder assembled, the other in pieces. Note the bronze valve lying in position in its steam chest. That's a one-inch micrometer. Big...

Big of the same. Big...

Both cylinders built up. The valve covers haven't yet been bored out for the valve rods, but otherwise things are pretty much done. Cylinder covers have been drilled and mounted, piston rod gland has been bored, gland nut has been turned from bronze rod. The piston rod is turned down from 1/2" stock, leaving a shoulder on which the piston itself can rest. Rod diameter is 1/4", less a few thousandths for clearance at the gland nut.

Nothing's been polished at this stage. Big...
